Description | A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the Civil War/Reconstruction period. United States History I includes the study of pre-Columbian, colonial, revolutionary, early national, slavery and sectionalism, and the Civil War/Reconstruction eras. Instructor Policies |
Communication: Students must use your LSC-PA email account, include your first and last name, and your course and section number. The course is 1301. The section number is 72. My email is kibbetm@lamarpa.eduand will get back to you usually within 24 hours unless it is a weekend. Emails received after 4:00pm on Fridays may not be answered until Monday. Please note that most questions can be answered by reading the class syllabus and schedule or consulting the “Course Assignment Help” tab on Blackboard. I do not use Blackboard email, so you may not get a response if you use the Blackboard messaging system. For any announcements concerning class, I will send out an email announcement on Blackboard, so please make a point to check often. You can also make an appointment for an online “real-time” meeting via Blackboard Collaborate. If you find yourself struggling in the class, I recommend doing this since it is difficult to communicate back and forth via email. Important Information About Taking Quizzes: It is your responsibility to ensure that you have an adequate amount of time, the proper atmosphere, and a secure connection to the internet to take the exams. I strongly suggest using a laptop or desktop computer—not your phone—and using a wired internet connection to avoid wi-fi fluctuations that may occur. Finally, you should also give yourself enough time to take these quizzes— don’t wait until the last minute—so that if your internet is “down” you can find another place to take it. Blackboard is a stable platform, so the ONLY way I will consider “re-setting” a quiz is if you submit a screenshot or picture of the error message showing that the site itself was at fault. Just “forgetting” that you had a quiz is due will not suffice for a reason to re-set it, so do not ask. The quizzes are open from the beginning of the session, so you have plenty of time to take them. I will not reset a quiz after it closes under any circumstances. Extra Credit: There are several opportunities for extra credit built-in to this class available to every student. 1. On all four quizzes, there are bonus questions providing additional points toward your overall grade accumulation. 2. For an initial post and two responses to your classmates on the Introduction Discussion Board (Cyber Café) before it closes on Monday, 12/18 @ 10:00pm, you can earn 10 points extra credit. There are no exceptions to this deadline. 3. There will be a 10-point bonus quiz that will cover material from the entire semester. It will close on Tuesday, 1/2 @ 10:00pm. Any points earned from this bonus quiz will be added to your overall point accumulation. 4. If you’ve read this far, thank you. You can earn an additional 10 bonus points if you email me a funny cat meme by Friday, 12/15 @ 10:00pm. To earn this extra credit, you must use your LSC-PA email and include your full name, as well as your course and section number by the due date. You will not receive extra credit without all of this information. There are no exceptions to this deadline. These are the only extra credit opportunities available in this class and, by definition, they are extra credit. This means that students who put forth the time and effort throughout the whole mini session— reading the assigned material, viewing assigned videos, completing assignments, and studying as recommended---will be able to make the most of these extra points. I will not, under any circumstances, entertain any requests at the end of the mini session for an “extra credit assignment” to help improve your grade or pass the class. Late Assignment Policies: Meeting deadlines is very important. Submitting assignments on time will allow for timely grading and feedback. In addition, it provides all students with equitable time to complete classwork. I will follow these policies in all cases. A) Syllabus Quiz: The syllabus may be submitted up to 3 days late (Wednesday, 12/20 @ 10:00pm) with a 5-point penalty for each late day. B) Mid-Term Discussion: This assignment is open from the beginning of the session. Your initial post and your responses to your classmates should be submitted by the due date @ 10:00pm. This is intended to count toward your participation and engagement in the class. Once the Mid-Term Discussion Board has closed (Wednesday, 12/27 @ 10:00pm) you will no longer have access to your classmates’ posts—this means that you cannot participate and engage with other students. As such, no late discussion responses will be accepted.I do not accept emailed discussion responses. C) Video Summaries: Video summaries are open from the beginning of the course and are due by 10:00pm on the due date—they can be submitted at any time before the due date/time. Students are required to submit 4 of the 5 video summaries. If all 5 are submitted, the highest 4 scores will count toward your final point total. Because of the flexibility for the submission of these assignments, no late summaries will be accepted. I do not accept emailed video summaries. D) Quizzes: Each quiz due date is clearly noted on the syllabus schedule—so please plan your time accordingly. Quizzes may be turned in up to two days late (except for Quiz #4)—with a 10-point penalty for each late day beginning at 10:01pm of the original due date/time. After the late window closes, you will not be able to take the quiz. I will not reset a quiz after the due date/time. |
